Picture a Western. There's the dusty saloon, the tumbleweeds, the long-handled stares, and the lonesome gunslinger. But in that location's a job. The someone you'Ra seeing in your mind's heart (probably) isn't Black.

The Harder They Fall aims to right that aggregate wrong, drawing on real-world Mordant men and women from the Antique West – cops, crooks, outlaws and entertainers – to help make up what director Jeymes Samuel has termed 'The Raw W.'

The upcoming Netflix western centers along cowboy Nat Love's well-damaged path of avenge after the polish off of his parents at the hands of Idris Elba's Rufus Buck. What follows is a spiffy Tarantino-esque tale that pulls in individual prominent Black figures from the West and infuses contemporary euphony – including tracks from Samuel's long-time booster (and producer on The Harder They Fall) John Jay-Z – for a razor-sharp portmanteau of long-overdue mythmaking.

The imaginativeness was there ("He says all the time 'I shot this movie in my head 100 times'," his lead Jonathan Majors quips) and the talent – Majors, Regina King, Idris Elba, among others – soon followed. This isn't your grandaddy's western. This is a current, old western.

"I came up with the story because of my love for westerns, and just how much I adored the musical genre, but also how overmuch I was frustrated with the opinionated viewpoints that Hollywood would pay us," Samuel explains to assembled press, including GamesRadar+.

To do so, Samuel cherrypicked the just about prominent name calling from 19th C America to retaking that lost, untold history. The likes of puncher Nat Love, legendary outlaw Rufus Buck, and Stage Mary are hoovered up from across the period and placed into nonpareil quad for the refreshing Netflix movie, which is also getting a limited run in theaters.

"The understanding wherefore I wanted to assemble complete of these unsung superheroes from over 100 years ago, is because no one would give me them in film. I wanted them all in i place. I privation to have my patty and eat IT," says Samuel.

"I wanted them altogether in the same place at the same time. So in order to coiffure that, I had to make a fictional narration while I accumulated these superheroes, the likes of the Avengers."

The best of the West

"To make a northwestern that has such a democratic canyon – to add to that and to amplify it [and] break open a whole other side of it that's always been at that place is a very, very, very particular thing to do."

It whitethorn have been a long, winding road to start hither – which includes the cinephile Samuel being bought a Super-8 camera at the tender age of seven – but the director wants The Harder They Fall to be simply the number one word in a larger conversation. It's a picture show that will harbor, but besides one that wish encourage and, ultimately, 1 that testament educate.

"The Harder They Fall is an interactive movie," Samuel says. "You watch the movie, and so you head home and hit Google and you recover come out of the closet about Rufus Buck."

For Majors, The Harder They Diminish will not only fight narratives forward but will set all but "expanding the latitude of storytelling."

"In that respect are indeed many different worlds that give birth been homogenised and that's just not actual," he adds. "I hope that we can tell eventide more stories, with the same amount of support that we got to make The Harder They Fall."

"Everyone came to play, and everyone knew that the jut was special," Samuel enthuses. "For me, at to the lowest degree, I terminate feel magic in everyone's thoughts. We were in the middle of COVID, but yet we all are with each other and unified, so to speak. I just think that magic that we felt between each other spilled onto the screen, and there was non really much I had to do to make sure everyone got the reflect."

As for the cast's view on Jeymes Samuel? His relative rawness in qualification feature article films (he had antecedently only directed a short western known as They Pass By Dawn in 2013) was a unmitigated non-factor.

"His vision was central for me," Idris Elba says. "I've best-known Jeymes for a long time. And he's really desirable to make this film for a long time. Indeed I had the benefit of knowing him personally, and knowing what he wants to achieve with the celluloid."

"My collaboration with Jay is similar breathing for me," Samuel explains. That partnership helps run along to a soundtrack that celebrates every corner of Black culture, from African opera singers, to mainstream rappers such atomic number 3 Kid Cudi.

"For me, medicine and film are one thing [and] they exist in the exact same place in my brain… it's all united sonic explosion of culture in this movie," Samuel says.

Majors is effusive about his director's approach to the intermingling of movies and music: "His Laputan overture as far every bit the music goes – he's a pop culture genius. He is same a walking algorithmic program of how to make something cool [and] how to spend a penny something popular. Yet, at the Lapplander time, he's artistic enough that helium can subvert those things and go far all rattling esthetic."

The humans may not know it just yet, but the leading hand of up-and-coming director Jeymes Samuel, anchored by his all-star cast, is about to rewrite and reclaim the language of westerns that were one time drenched in a false tradition.

Instead, the Harder They Return shows the west as it always meant to be: oddly everyday, yet telling a new rather truth. This is pistols at dawn, a fresh perspective, and an untold history finally sweeping into town along the horse information technology rode in connected.
